Lesson 11
This was our first day back from winter break, so we did the bare minimum. Much of our time was spent doing a winter break find someone who, talking about expectations, and practicing routines.
Listening: They filled out the flip book for The Human Voice. During the listening, I wrote vocabulary words on the board and asked them to use them in their sentences.
Spelling: We watched a couple long a videos, and did a word sort. I wrote the word on the board, we talked about the spelling rule, and they wrote it under a heading in their notebook. They used these to play games on wordwall.net.
Reading: Did not do, just because of time and we did not make this up later.
Lesson 12
Reading: We did Chapters 10-11 using the interactive workbook page. We follow this routine: Listen using the Hub - take notes, Reread on their own - take notes, Share with a partner, Share whole group. Repeat with each page.
Spelling: We segmented by syllable, discussing the rule for each word.
We had a fundraiser kickoff during CKLA so I moved Language to the next day. This is a huge time-saving tip. Save Language for last - it’s easier to move this to another day than a read aloud or chapter since there is reading/listening every day, and not always a language lesson.
Lesson 13
Reading: We did Chapter 12 using the same routine as yesterday.
Listening: We watched a video explaining the parts of a newspaper - many kids have never read one!
Language: This was yesterday’s lesson. We did page 12.4 together.
Writing: We started researching. They spent some time just reading/listening to books about inventions and inventors. By the end of the timer, they had to have made a decision about their invention of choice.
Lesson 14
Reading - This was from Lesson 13. They used a Venn Diagram with chapters 10, 11, 12 to compare and contrast the 2 inventors. They worked with a partner to reread, discuss, and take notes. After 15 minutes, they switched partners and continued working.
Writing - We researched using Epic, Google, and Youtube. I monitored this closely and had them add “for kids” in their searches. Many students got to 14.2, writing the paragraphs.
Lessons 15-16
Writing: We came up with Lead Paragraphs and Conclusions together. They wrote on 14.2, then did the revision checklist and partner feedback sheets. The next day, we turned these into newspapers. I did not give them a template as I prefer them to have open ended projects. All they had to include was the information they collected about their invention and inventor, and one photo + caption related to it.
